New Jersey Mesothelioma Lawyers Discuss Exposure to Naturally Occurring Asbestos

There are various safeguards that have been established to protect those who work around asbestos, because the risk of developing mesothelioma is so high when exposure occurs. Second-hand exposure from a loved one who worked around asbestos is also been a known health risk. Recently, there is a new concern for health risks to individuals who may have no idea that they have been exposed to asbestos simply by being outside.

A recent study published in the Journal of Thoracic Oncology and conducted by researchers at the University of Hawaii addresses a growing concern that an increased amount of women and people under the age of 55 in Southern Nevada were developing cancer and dying from mesothelioma. These two demographic groups had higher incidences of the disease than men who worked around asbestos and commonly developed mesothelioma. The study findings led researchers to believe that exposure to naturally occurring asbestos fibers may very well be the cause of serious health risks to women and younger people.

Moreover, the study reveals that environmental exposure to asbestos causes the same amount of mesothelioma cases in young people as the number of mesothelioma cases reported in 74 year old men who were exposed in an occupational setting up to 30 years ago. The rate of mesothelioma cases in Southern Nevada and the different types of naturally occurring mineral fibers were examined. Conclusions of the study suggest that some of the mesothelioma cases in women and people under the age of 55 were caused by environmental exposure to mineral fibers in this region. Authors of the study feel additional research on environmental exposure of asbestos is needed to develop ways to decrease naturally occurring asbestos exposure.

Asbestos-related illnesses may more likely develop in individuals who live in areas where there is a lot of construction, or in dry climates where dust storms are prevalent. All of these factors increase the risk of inhaling dangerous asbestos fibers.  Individuals who have suffered asbestos exposure and are faced with a mesothelioma diagnosis often have the grounds to file a lawsuit if the exposure was due to negligence.
