Increase in Mesothelioma Cases in Australia Stimulate New Research

Australia is known to have one of the highest incidences of mesothelioma in the world.  Typically, the people diagnosed with mesothelioma in Australia were those who worked in the Australian mines and in the construction and shipbuilding industries.  However, recently, a new population has been determined to be at great risk.  It is those individuals who are employed in the home renovation service industry such as electricians or other tradesmen as well as homeowners themselves who have decided to take on their own home renovation projects.

Not only are home renovators or do-it-yourselfers at risk. All other adult and child family members in the home are also at risk of asbestos exposure when the asbestos fibers become airborne.  Women can also be exposed if they handle and wash the clothing that is worn during the renovations.  Despite the existing ban on asbestos, the peak incidence for mesothelioma cases in Australia is projected to reach its height by 2020.  Foreseeing this growing problem, a group of Australian scientists decided to investigate and develop a new approach to treating this dreadful cancer.

New Strategy for Treating Mesothelioma:  Protein Blocking Treatment

A research team at Flinders University in Australia led by Associate Professor Sonja Klebe has focused their work on studying particular elements that enable a mesothelioma tumor to flourish.  Their new developed therapy is specifically being tested to block two particular proteins that help a mesothelioma tumor to grow.  One of the proteins is considered a growth factor and the other is a channel protein.  Blocking these proteins can help delay tumor growth and interrupt the process that enables blood vessels to supply essential nutrients to the tumor.

According to the researchers, they know that individually blocking these proteins is beneficial in slowing the progression of the disease but there is no information as to how mesothelioma tumors respond when you block these proteins simultaneously.  The researchers hope that their novel treatment may also help clinicians calculate more accurate survival rates and life expectancy.  So far, the researchers have seen improved survival rates during their initial testing on animals.
