Most medical providers say the best way to combat cancers like mesothelioma is through early detection. Researchers at Tufts University School of Arts and Sciences have discovered a bioelectric signal that can recognize cells that may develop into tumors, and may have developed a means to manipulate the cells’ bioelectric signals to decrease the cancer growth.
The Tufts University researchers stimulated tumor growth in frog embryos, causing them to develop growths associated with human cancers. The growths were then analyzed using voltage-sensitive dye, which allowed researchers to monitor the cell activity using a fluorescence microscope. Upon analysis, the researchers found the tumors, which were highlighted by the dye, had unique features that suggested a distinctive bioelectric signal as compared to the surrounding tissue.
The Tufts researchers were also able to show that they could decrease the number of cancer cells by manipulating the bioelectrical charge from the cell membrane. Michael Levin, a biology professor involved with the study, confirmed that the electric voltages not only detect cancer cells, but can also control and dictate whether the cancer cells will develop.
This research involving bioelectric signals is encouraging a potential non-invasive cancer detection method; however, continued research is needed to combat the thousands of deaths that occur from mesothelioma and other deadly cancers each year. Sadly, despite these promising advances, mesothelioma remains a deadly and incurable cancer with symptoms that may not present for decades.
