Early diagnosis is crucial for patients suffering from mesothelioma. Unfortunately, due to current diagnosis methods, an early diagnosis of mesothelioma is rare. However, new technology developed by Google artificial intelligence (AI) experts may be the solution the mesothelioma community needs. The technology, a new machine learning tool using AI, can identify the rare cancer before doctors can. Although this technology is in its infancy, it is already changing the way doctors view cancer diagnoses.
Fortunately for mesothelioma patients, advanced AI can identify cancers that doctors are unable to see, including lung cancers. Doctors typically use CT scans to detect a developing cancer. However, identifying early-stage cancer with modern imaging tools can be challenging. Therefore, doctors are typically unable to detect cancer until it is in its later stages. This ultimately affects patient survival rate. However, the AI machine tool is changing how patients are diagnosed, and ultimately, their life expectancies.
When used in a clinical setting, results are promising. In one case, six doctors scanned an individual for lung cancer. While using a regular CT scan, five out of the six doctors were unable to identify cancer development in the patient. However, despite their findings, the individual developed stage 3 lung cancer the following year, which the AI machine successfully identified. According to the opinion of a machine learning specialist, this new technology may reduce the rate of lung cancer-related fatalities by up to 40 percent. These results indicate hope for future mesothelioma patients.
Mesothelioma patient survival rate is typically dependent on the time of diagnosis. Since doctors are typically unable to identify developing cancer in its earlier stages, patients often obtain a mesothelioma diagnosis when the cancer is in stages 3 or 4. Mesothelioma tends to claim lives quickly, leaving patients little time to obtain treatment or plan arrangements.
However, the AI machine allows patients to obtain an early diagnosis. An early mesothelioma diagnosis gives patients an opportunity to begin treatment. Those who are diagnosed earlier tend to be eligible for certain treatments, including surgery and aggressive treatments. Similarly, the treatment will likely be more effective because late-stage cancer tends to resist treatment, leading to higher death rates.
Mesothelioma patients who are diagnosed in stage 1 have a better life expectancy than those diagnosed in stages 3 or 4. Based on the averages from various cases, those diagnosed in stage 1 tend to have an average life expectancy of 21 months. However, those who are diagnosed in stage 3 have a life expectancy of only 16 months. For those who are diagnosed in stage 4, the average life expectancy is only 12 months. Based on these estimates, the new AI machine learning tool could nearly double the life expectancy of a mesothelioma patient.
