Philadelphia Mesothelioma Lawyers: Study Reports that Survival Rates May Not Be Linked to Treatment Type

Some new information from Australia provides interesting insight into survival rates for mesothelioma patients.  The Asbestos Diseases Research Institute and Sydney Medical School conducted a study in an area of the country long known for its asbestos mining industry.   More than 900 patients diagnosed with pleural mesothelioma were specifically analyzed for this research study.

The good news is that study findings reveal that survival rates for those suffering from pleural mesothelioma have increased.   Specifically, criteria for improved survival include patients diagnosed under the age of 70, female patients, those with epithelioid histology, decreased neutrophil/lymphocyte ratio and normal hemoglobin.   These findings were consistent with other similarly situated research for survival rates of people with pleural mesothelioma.

Another interesting and more surprising finding of the study shows that treatment for mesothelioma may not have as much to do with a patient’s increased survival rate as one would surmise.  The Australian study confirmed that patients who specifically underwent two treatments, extrapleural pneumonectomy (EPP) and pemetrexed-based chemotherapy, experienced longer survival rates.  However, in addition researchers identified another group of patients with a high survival rate who did not undergo those types of treatments.  In fact, a large majority of long-term mesothelioma survivors were not part of either of these treatment plans which raises the question: What exactly is the most effective way to treat mesothelioma?

This study provides valuable information to researchers and medical professionals regarding precisely what is the most valuable type of treatment options that will maximize a patient’s chance of survival.
