According to a new study conducted by England’s National Cancer Intelligence Network (NCIN), rare cancers such as mesothelioma make up more than 50% of the cancer-related fatalities in the United Kingdom. The new report from Cancer52 reveals that 2,500 mesothelioma cases are diagnosed in the UK annually. Moreover, in 2011 there were 2,009 fatalities from mesothelioma in Great Britain. Study data also reports that industrial and construction workers exposed to asbestos at work are most frequently diagnosed with mesothelioma.
The NCIN study highlights the unique challenges in treating and managing a disease such as mesothelioma. Because mesothelioma is such a rare form of cancer, there is a high risk of delayed or missed diagnosis. Moreover, mesothelioma and other rare cancers are difficult to treat successfully.
