Philadelphia Asbestos Attorneys Report on New Asbestos Detection Device

Researchers at the University of Hertfordshire in the United Kingdom have revealed what purports to be a revolutionary breakthrough in the ability to test for airborne asbestos-containing fibers.  This progressive device is said to be the first asbestos-detection device that is transportable and can provide test results instantaneously.

Currently, there are two methods used to check for lingering airborne asbestos fibers.  A filter can be used to collect fibers at a building’s site.  The fibers can then be analyzed at an offsite laboratory to establish if any of the airborne fibers contain the toxic asbestos.  The potential problem with this method is the delay in time between collection and testing.

An alternate means to analyze questionable fibers in the air is with a portable sensor.  This portable device can be used on-site.  However, the current apparatus has its limitations.  Although its portability makes it expedient, it cannot distinguish between asbestos and other less hazardous fibers.

Innovative Detector for Airborne Asbestos is Developed

The researchers at the University of Hertfordshire use laser technology in their new portable device.   Asbestos fibers have unique characteristics that respond distinctively when laser light is aligned with a magnetic field in the apparatus.  The advantage of the new detection design is that the presence of asbestos can be immediately identified on-site.  Therefore, safety precautions can be proactively taken to protect workers from asbestos exposure.

Models of the new portable detection devices are being tested in locations where active asbestos removal, building demolition and renovations are underway.  The first Hertfordshire devices are scheduled to be available for use in industry within 12 to 18 months.  This is extremely promising, since timelier and more accurate detection of asbestos may reduce asbestos exposure and the occurrence of asbestos-related diseases such as mesothelioma.
