William T. William T. Muzzio, Jr. and his company, Citadel Environmental Consultants, were hired to remove asbestos-containing pipe insulation from a boiler room in a daycare center in Union, New Jersey. After the state department of Health and Human Services discovered that Muzzio was operating without the proper licensing credentials from the New Jersey Department of Labor, an investigation was launched by the Labor Department and the New Jersey Division of Criminal Justice. Investigations revealed that Muzzio had also illegally removed asbestos-containing insulation and had improperly sealed asbestos tiles in another 35 area sites, including 13 schools. Because asbestos is a known carcinogen, officials are extremely concerned about the possible exposure to students in the affected schools.
