Mesothelioma is a type of cancer found in the outer lining of the lungs most commonly diagnosed in people exposed to asbestos. New research shows that some individuals with even minimal asbestos exposure can have a considerably higher chance of developing mesothelioma because they inherited a specific gene mutation.
University of Hawaii cancer researchers understand the tumor suppressing role of the BAP1 gene and discovered that a mutation in the gene prevents proteins from inhibiting tumor formation when cancer is present. The recent study involved administering BAP1 mutated genes into mice then exposing those mice to asbestos. This revealed that BAP1 mice had a higher incidence of mesothelioma after low exposure to asbestos than ordinary mice. The mice that did not receive the mutated BAP1 did not show the inflammatory responses to asbestos that induce mesothelioma.
Although asbestos exposure levels and duration are associated with the risks of developing mesothelioma, University of Hawaii researchers discovered a gene mutation that may identify those at higher risk for developing asbestos related cancers. Gene mutations are hereditary and differences in DNA may contribute to why some people are more susceptible to cancer than others with the same asbestos exposure.
Many people diagnosed with mesothelioma have worked in industries that commonly use asbestos such as construction, insulation and demolition. Not everyone exposed to asbestos develops mesothelioma; however, and current research recognizes the possibility of predisposed genetic connections to cancer regardless of carcinogen exposure.
