Asbestos Found in Nickelodeon Star’s Makeup Line

Asbestos is a known hazard found in pipe wrapping, automotive work, shipbuilding applications, and now, makeup products. A popular makeup line sold widely at Claire’s Stores, Inc. and marketed to teenage fans of the Nickelodeon star, JoJo Siwa, was the latest to contain the dangerous product. The powdered eyeshadow included in the JoJo Cosmetic kit tested positive for asbestos, according to the Food and Drug Administration (FDA). Claire’s recalled the product and the FDA advised anyone who purchased the items to cease using them. These kits can be returned to Claire’s for a refund.

Asbestos Risks

Asbestos is a fibrous mineral that was used extensively in many industries for its heat resistant and insulating properties. Asbestos was widely used in the 1970s in the manufacturing, roofing, automotive, and shipbuilding industries, as well as in homes. Since the 1970s when awareness grew of the hazards to humans, it has been used far less. However, those exposed to asbestos are at high risk of developing mesothelioma cancer. Claire’s also released a statement about their commitment to the safety of their products, and that they believed trace amounts of asbestos were acceptable under other standards in Europe and Canada. Currently, the FDA does not review cosmetic products before they are on the market except for color additives. The FDA can pursue legal enforcement once the product is on the market if they are out of compliance with regulations.
