Researchers have discovered novel ways to turn genes on and off as a way for the body to tell the difference between primary tumors and metastatic tumors. Preliminary studies involving cells from animals show that this type of work could prevent mesothelioma cancer from metastasizing from the lungs into other areas of the body.
The findings suggest that an altered gene-enhancer activity is what drives the cancer cell’s ability to metastasize in the body. Researchers in a study at Case Western Reserve University School of Medicine in Cleveland, Ohio found that there were “bunched clusters of enhancers” very close to the cancer cells that had metastasized to the lungs. These enhancers can be interrupted with BET inhibitor drugs, and researchers found in mice that they were able to slow down the cancer growth in the lungs. Although more research is needed, BET inhibitors are a promising gene-related class of anti-cancer drugs now in clinical trials.
Halting the growth of the cancer to other areas of the body could be a major breakthrough. This could increase the survival of the nearly 3,000 Americans diagnosed with mesothelioma each year. This could also be a breakthrough for the treatment of other types of cancers as well.
