Philadelphia Mesothelioma Lawyers: Millennials Asbestos Exposure Risk

Millennials may be the first generation in decades to have less fear of cancer than their parents. Although cancer rates continue to climb, success in battling this terrible disease is also growing. However, millennials should still be careful, especially regarding mesothelioma.

How Serious is Millennial Asbestos Exposure?

Millennials are exposed to asbestos almost as often as their parents. The leading cause of mesothelioma, a currently incurable form of cancer, is exposure to asbestos. With millennials entering the workforce, many will become exposed directly. Yet indirect exposure is also a major concern since asbestos fibers cling to clothing and hair, resulting in the deadly substance being transported from worksites into homes.

In Pennsylvania and New Jersey, rates of mesothelioma are much higher than average. The national average of asbestos-related fatalities is 4.9 per 100,000. In the Greater-Philadelphia area, the top seven averages are:

  • Gloucester County 14.5
  • Delaware County 12.9
  • Montgomery County 10.8
  • Burlington County 9.5
  • Bucks County 8.0
  • Chester County 6.1
  • Philadelphia County 5.9

For millennials living in the Philly area, asbestos exposure and mesothelioma should be a serious concern.

Asbestos Exposure in Philadelphia is High

Part of the reason asbestos exposure is so high in the Philadelphia and New Jersey area is because of the many factories and building sites. Although most industrial nations have banned asbestos, the United States has not. For this reason, it continues to be used and to contribute to high rates of mesothelioma and other deadly diseases.

Even if asbestos is not used directly in construction, there is a risk of exposure. For instance, many older buildings contain asbestos. When these are either torn down or renovated, sanding and cutting causes the fibers to be released. Even under the best conditions, these fibers will make their way into the air. Once breathed in, they lodge in the lungs and remain there.

Even if not breathed in directly, asbestos fibers can become lodged in work clothes which are then laundered, releasing the fibers into the home to be inhaled by spouses and children.

Because this is such a serious issue in Philadelphia, the city has even established a special Asbestos Control Unit, one of the few in the nation.
