Philadelphia Mesothelioma Lawyers: How Mesothelioma is Diagnosed?

Diagnosing Mesothelioma Requires a Medical Evaluation

Individuals who are suffering from mesothelioma can initially suffer from symptoms like difficult breathing, chest pain, fatigue, weight loss, and nausea. These symptoms can indicate many illnesses, so it is important that individuals who exhibit them seek medical attention in order to determine their cause as soon as possible.

Determining whether an individual is suffering from mesothelioma requires the individual to undergo medical testing from a doctor. Mesothelioma has a latency period of 20 to 50 years, which is why the patient’s full disclosure of his or her medical history and exposure to asbestos is critical to receiving an accurate diagnosis.

After reviewing the patient’s medical history, the doctor will then look for specific types of mesothelioma. To determine if the patient is suffering from pleural mesothelioma, he or she checks for fluid in the patient’s chest. The doctor then follows this up with diagnostic imaging, which could be done with an x-ray, a CT scan, an MRI, or a PET scan. If a tumor is detected, it may then be sent for a biopsy to determine whether or not it is cancerous. This can be done in one of two ways: a surgical biopsy where a portion of the tumor is surgically removed and tested, or a needle biopsy where fluid from the affected area is removed with a long needle for testing.
