Link Between Asbestos Exposure and Mesothelioma

According to a recently published Italian study entitled, “Malignant mesotheliomas with unknown exposure to asbestos: a reexamination,” it is highly likely that anyone diagnosed with mesothelioma has come in contact with asbestos at some point in their life. Asbestos is the leading cause of mesothelioma in the world. And while there are cases wherein exposure to asbestos cannot be clearly identified, researchers believe it is because people simply did not look hard enough.

Typically, if you have been diagnosed with mesothelioma, you will need to undergo a series of tests, as well as provide a thorough work history, since the vast majority of patients with the disease have come in contact with asbestos at work. People who work in construction, plumbing, electrical, and ship building face a significant risk of asbestos exposure. The United States enforces strict regulations on the handling of asbestos, and many countries have banned the use of it altogether after asbestos was determined to be the major cause of pleural mesothelioma, lung cancer, asbestosis, and other diseases.

Data Confirms Link to Asbestos

A team of researchers from the University of Milan reexamined 364 patients who, originally, did not appear to have come in contact with asbestos. After taking a closer look at lifestyle habits, interviewing family members and colleagues, and closely analyzing their work environments, the team confirmed that many of these malignant mesothelioma cases could in fact be linked to asbestos exposure. The research revealed the following results:

  • Of the 364 patients evaluated, 44 patients (12%) were exposed to asbestos.
  • In fifteen percent of these cases, almost half were exposed to asbestos, confirming a “possible occupational exposure.”
  • Of the previously unclassified cases of mesothelioma, 36% were related to asbestos exposure in their homes, environments, or leisure activities.

By reexamining the clinical data, and focusing on the occupational history and lifestyle habits of the patients diagnosed with malignant mesothelioma, researchers were able to identify and acknowledge previously overlooked asbestos exposure. For individuals who have been exposed to asbestos, this provides important information towards diagnosing mesothelioma, as well as helping to determine whether a patient is eligible for financial compensation.
