Urban Explorers Unknowingly Exposed to Asbestos

Exploring abandoned city structures has quickly become one of the top trend hobbies, particular for the younger generation. Artists, advertisers, historians, photographers and those craving to do something new and different are visiting abandoned tunnels, houses, bridges and other types of homes. Hobbyists who regularly explore these types of places have been dubbed “urban explorers.” While this new trend may seem harmless, many do not realize the dangers associated with exploring decaying urban structures.

For instance, oftentimes urban explorers are not properly educated in how to protect themselves against asbestos. Exposure to asbestos is the leading cause of mesothelioma and other deadly respiratory diseases. In the past, architects and construction workers were unaware of the dangers associated with exposure to asbestos. During WWII, it was important to build and insulate houses as cheaply as possible and as a result, asbestos was used in nearly all new buildings at the time.

Mesothelioma can lie dormant in the body for forty to sixty years. Once detected, it may be difficult to treat due to the likely high amount of lung damage that has already accumulated over time. Although all present day occupied buildings are now asbestos-free, the public is still feeling the repercussions of its prior use. The number of mesothelioma cases continues to be on the rise because victims are now showing symptom’s of their diseases that they contracted decades ago.
