Construction sites are already one of the most dangerous places to work when it comes to accidents on the job. Sadly, there is one potentially fatal risk to construction workers that often goes unseen for years. Mesothelioma, or cancer of the mesothelial tissue, affects the lining of the lungs or abdomen, and is almost exclusively caused by specific exposure to microscopic asbestos particles. It is considered the most serious disease caused by asbestos, which was widely used in building materials prior to 1980. Symptoms of the disease do not usually manifest until twenty to fifty years following initial exposure, and can often present as symptoms associated with many other common ailments, which makes mesothelioma very difficult to diagnose.
Construction workers are particularly at risk of developing mesothelioma due to the way in which many are exposed to asbestos. Buildings built before 1980 most likely used asbestos in their walls, insulation and roofs. Left alone, the asbestos poses little risk. When those materials are disturbed such as during construction or renovation, it allows microscopic asbestos fibers to be released in the air. This put those in the area at higher risk for complications. Because of this, construction workers who worked on or constructed buildings prior to 1980 could potentially be starting to show signs of the disease today. Furthermore, construction workers today who are involved in the demolition or renovation of buildings built prior to 1980 are also at a high risk of developing mesothelioma.
It is imperative that construction workers follow the safety and health regulations put in place by The Occupational Safety and Health Administration (OSHA) and the Environment Protection Agency (EPA). These regulations aim to protect construction workers from the dangers of asbestos, and yet studies show that they are still considered high risk for exposure. Training is essential to ensure that workers understand and implement these safety regulations. It is as much a company’s responsibility to provide adequate and clear training to its employees as it is an employee’s responsibility to abide by the regulations and guidelines set forth for them.
