National Mesothelioma Day will be commemorated on September 26, 2015. The Asbestos Disease Awareness Organization (ADAO) is preparing to introduce a new social media campaign this year, which will highlight 12 stories of mesothelioma victims and their families.
ADOA combines advocacy, education and community to help support and improve the lives of victims of this rare cancer. Moreover, ADOA works with public health organizations to help prevent asbestos exposure. The organization continues to urge Congress to enact an asbestos ban. In an effort to promote awareness prior to Mesothelioma Day, ADAO organizer, Linda Reinstein will lead #ENDMeso chats on Twitter on Tuesdays in September from 12:00 pm to 1:00 pm, Eastern Time.
ADOA was founded in 2004 and their efforts to bring visibility to mesothelioma has changed the lives of many affected by this disease. Thirty years ago, treatment options and research funds were limited. Fundraising events and other advocacy efforts now support funding for research that lead to better treatment therapies and longer life expectancy. Sadly, as many as 3,000 individuals suffering from asbestos related diseases die each year and once diagnosed, patients have a life expectancy of one year or less. However, because of continued efforts directed by the ADOA, the disease is no longer a death sentence. The longest living survivor of mesothelioma gives hope to other victims and families by sharing his 18-year survival story in his book, Surviving Mesothelioma and Other Cancers: A Patient’s Guide.
The Raise Your Voice Campaign # ENDMeso strives for United States leaders to hear the stories of victims and their families who are struggling with mesothelioma. ADAO asserts that many Americans cannot identify asbestos or manage its risks. Furthermore, Reinstein maintains that Americans are under the false impression that asbestos is already banned in the United States; however, approximately 30 million pounds of asbestos are used each year. The campaign will also highlight legislation that supports the asbestos industry, which prevents mesothelioma victims from receiving proper compensation.
This year the Mesothelioma Applied Research Foundation asks everyone affected by this cancer to wear blue on September 26, 2015 in support of Mesothelioma Day to help raise as awareness in person and online.
