New Jersey Asbestos Lawyers Report Asbestos Cement Plants Show Higher Risk of Mesothelioma

University researchers from Italy’s Department of Occupational and Environmental Medicine have released new studies supporting the fact that asbestos cement manufacturing plants create an increased risk of asbestos-related illness. Workers, as well as those who live in close proximity to asbestos cement plants, are being adversely affected due to exposure to asbestos.  This shows that in addition to direct exposure to asbestos, environmental exposure can be just as deadly. In addition, it has been shown that some victims of asbestos cancers, such as mesothelioma, are non-asbestos textile industries, meaning they also do not directly work with asbestos filled products.

Along with asbestos cement plants, shipbuilding and repair industries are also industries filled with asbestos; those three are the main sources of asbestos exposure. Previously, asbestos was popularly used as a binding agent in cement to keep it sturdy and flexible. Although the cement with asbestos is industrially useful, the asbestos burrows into soft tissues of the body such as the lungs when inhaled or ingested, and can cause further health issues. The Mesothelioma Resource Online, stated that those who smoke and are exposed to asbestos are 9,000 times more likely to develop mesothelioma. Although there have been movements to illegalize asbestos in the United States, the asbestos industry has prevented any attempts leaving citizens open to harm.

To avoid the harmful effects of asbestos it is always best to stay on the side of caution. When asbestos infected areas are disturbed, it can negatively impact those in the vicinity of the substance. Asbestos-related illnesses typically have an incubation period of ten to 50 years after exposure, but once diagnosed the typical mesothelioma patient has a six to 12 month life expectancy. Mesothelioma is a devastating disease which plagues asbestos workers and those who live in the vicinity.
