New Jersey Mesothelioma Lawyers: Meso Foundation and Workers Memorial Day

Workers Memorial Day was recently held to recognize workers who have died due to unsafe or unhealthy conditions in the workplace.  The day also commemorates the many workers who have sustained workplace injuries or illnesses.  Every year, April 28th is an opportunity to highlight the importance of establishing healthier and safer work sites. The Occupational Health and Safety Administration (OSHA) was established on April 28, 1970 to implement practices and procedures that would hold businesses accountable to provide healthy and safe work environments for employees.

The Meso Foundation, formerly known as the Mesothelioma Applied Research Foundation, participated this year in the Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania Workers Memorial Day Ceremony.  Diane Blackburn-Zambetti, Meso Foundation Director of Policy and Prevention Education, spoke at an event in memory of her father, Dale Blackburn, who died from pleural mesothelioma due to asbestos exposure while employed as a pipefitter. The focus of Ms. Blackburn-Zambetti’s speech was to draw attention to the damaging risks of asbestos exposure in the work environment. She stated that fatalities from this exposure occur many years after the exposure due to the 20 to 50 year latency period associated with mesothelioma.

In 2012, 4,628 workers suffered fatal workplace injuries and an estimated 50,000 workers died from diseases acquired through the workplace.  Statistics show that close to four million employees suffered work injuries and illnesses, but the actual numbers could be two to three times higher. OSHA and trade organizations, such as the AFL-CIO, hold annual events throughout the U.S. to raise awareness in the fight to improve working conditions.

The Meso Foundation is the only non-profit organization dedicated to ending the suffering caused by mesothelioma.  The foundation works toward this goal through funding research, educating patients and their families, and helping with treatment options. Advocacy efforts with Congress have gained over nine million dollars in federal monies while philanthropic efforts of the foundation have yielded an additional nine million dollars to fund peer-reviewed research and clinical trials.
