New Jersey Mesothelioma Lawyers Discuss Treatment Choices

When a patient receives a mesothelioma diagnosis, they are presented with a variety of treatment options.  As with any devastating news, a person’s choice of treatments for mesothelioma may depend on a host of varying factors.  Angelina Jolie recently made public her choice to remove her ovaries and fallopian tubes, due to her increased risk of cancer, campaigning for individuals to make the best choice that is right for them.  While the celebrity actress made a choice that may be considered radical, her public admission was intended to stress that women should manage their health by making individual treatment choices.

Patients diagnosed with mesothelioma can choose which treatment they want, how much of the treatment to receive, where to go and the way in which they want to receive treatment, or they can choose not to receive any treatment.  Factors such as the symptoms of mesothelioma, painful treatment side effects, the stage of the mesothelioma, and the quality of life one wishes to endure are important considerations in choosing a treatment plan.

Two Mesothelioma Patients – Two Different Treatment Choices

An article recently published in the New York Times spoke of two men, approximately 70 years of age, who were recently diagnosed with pleural mesothelioma but chose two very different treatment plans. One man had virtually no symptoms that affected his quality of life.  This patient chose no treatment and was going home to live his life.  However, he decided to accept palliative care when it became necessary.  Palliative care involves a team of healthcare workers such as doctors, nurses, and social workers who focus on symptoms and the strain of dealing with a terminal situation.  They manage the pain and symptoms in order to keep the patient and their families comfortable.

The other man chose to aggressively treat the cancer with surgery, chemotherapy, clinical trials, and palliative care simultaneously.  His family supported him through the difficult treatments, but he found his treatment to be most beneficial.  Both men were presented with all options, made their courageous choices, and in the end, both did what they felt was right for their individual circumstances.
