In a new study just released, Swiss scientists at the Institute of Diagnostic and Interventional Radiology in Zurich have concluded that a better approach is needed to determine the level of cancer staging in mesothelioma patients.
Mesothelioma is a disease that affects the membrane lining of the lungs and abdomen. It is the most serious of all asbestos-related cancers and is quite aggressive. It is extremely important that the cancer be diagnosed in its early stages so that the most effective treatment options are made available to the patients. Making a correct mesothelioma diagnosis can be quite challenging because the symptoms of mesothelioma are often associated with those of the common cold or bronchitis.
At this point in time, a PET/CT scan is the most effective way to determine a patient’s stage and cancer growth. Computed tomography (CT) scans uses x-rays and computer images while Positron Emission Tomography (PET) creates three-dimensional pictures of the bodies’ processes and how they are functioning.
Accurate tests used for staging of mesothelioma are also extremely important when determining the level of chemotherapy treatment needed to shrink tumors before surgery. The study found that both the PET/CT scan and just the CT scan did not accurately estimate the size and level of seriousness of the tumors in nearly 30 % of cases. Although it was determined that PET/CT scan is probably better for determining levels of cancer than a CT scan alone, the substantial number of patients who were given inaccurate tumor stage readings after scanning led scientists to conclude that a better system needs to be developed. The study provides useful information to medical professionals when determining what type of scanning and testing will be most beneficial for mesothelioma patients.
