Even Low Levels of Asbestos Exposure Create Risk for Cancer

A new study investigated the link between the level of asbestos exposure and its correlation between the development of cancer.  Alarmingly, the research revealed that industrial workers exposed to even the smallest amounts of asbestos on the job are at risk of developing asbestos-related diseases including mesothelioma, laryngeal cancer and lung cancer.

Over a 17 year period, researchers collected and analyzed data from the Netherlands Cohort Study.   Researchers analyzed data from more than 58,000 senior Norwegian men aged 55 – 69 years old for the study.   The data was used to compare the direct link between the men’s professions and associated asbestos exposure with specific types of cancers.  The research findings were recently published in the Journal of Occupational and Environmental Medicine.

Overall, the following asbestos-related diseases were reported during the research period:

  • 132 cases of mesothelioma
  • 2,324 cases of lung cancer
  • 166 cases of laryngeal cancer

Study findings showed that regardless of the amount of exposure to asbestos, the incidence of cancer was still prevalent in all levels of occupations.  For employees exposed to small amounts of asbestos this included pleural mesothelioma, lung cancer, and laryngeal cancer.  The study concluded that there is no safe level of asbestos exposure for any worker.  Even a trace amount of exposure to the deadly toxin can result in the development of cancer.
