Pennsylvania Mesothelioma Attorneys Report: Triple Combination Therapy Showing Longer Survival Rates for Mesothelioma Patients

A recently published study has shown encouraging results in lengthening the survival rates for mesothelioma patients when they are treated with a triple modality combination therapy of surgery, chemotherapy and radiotherapy.  These findings may bring some much-needed hope to mesothelioma patients and their families. The Philadelphia mesothelioma lawyers at Brookman, Rosenberg, Brown & Sandler are optimistic that this new study may help pave the way for the future of mesothelioma treatments.

The new study was completed by a group of medical researchers from northern Italy.  Participants included twenty consecutive individuals diagnosed with malignant pleural mesothelioma.  All of the patients underwent a radical pleurectomy/decortication (P/D), a surgery in which the lining surrounding the lung as well as any tumor masses are removed, preserving the affected lung. High doses of radiotherapy are then administered to the affected side of the chest..  Nineteen of the patients also received the chemotherapy regimen of cisplatin/pemetrexed.

The researcher’s analysis revealed a median overall survival rate of 33 months.  The overall survival rate at two years was 70 percent.  At three years, it was 49 percent.  These figures represent some of the best survival rates that have been documented in recent studies.  It is suggested that the treatment combination of surgery, radiotherapy and chemotherapy should be seriously considered as a treatment option for patients diagnosed with malignant pleural mesothelioma.  The complete study findings were printed in a recent issue of the international journal, Lung Cancer.
