Mesothelioma is a terminal lung disease directly related to exposure to asbestos. Patients diagnosed with mesothelioma often resort to surgical intervention to delay the progress of the disease. The study followed 47 mesothelioma patients who underwent surgical intervention to remove diseased pleural tissue and membranes that surround the lung, or that had a total removal of the diseased lung and affected membranes. The study found that patients whose mesothelioma recurred within a two-year period following their initial surgery had a survival rate between 2.7 months and 35 months following their second surgery. For patients whose disease recurred within the first year following surgery, the survival rate following their second surgery was just 8.9 months. The most promising findings related to those patients whose recurrence happened more than two years after their initial surgery. The survival rate following their second surgery was close to three years.
