Survival Rates for Recurring Mesothelioma Linked to Success of Surgical Intervention

Mesothelioma is a terminal lung disease directly related to exposure to asbestos.  Patients diagnosed with mesothelioma often resort to surgical intervention to delay the progress of the disease.  A new study conducted by the Stanford School of Medicine, and published in the Journal of Thoracic and Cardiovascular Surgery found that survival rates of mesothelioma patients were directly related to the amount of time it took for the cancer to recur following surgery.

The study followed 47 mesothelioma patients who underwent surgical intervention to remove diseased pleural tissue and membranes that surround the lung, or that had a total removal of the diseased lung and affected membranes.  The study found that patients whose mesothelioma recurred within a two-year period following their initial surgery had a survival rate between 2.7 months and 35 months following their second surgery.  For patients whose disease recurred within the first year following surgery, the survival rate following their second surgery was just 8.9 months.  The most promising findings related to those patients whose recurrence happened more than two years after their initial surgery.  The survival rate following their second surgery was close to three years.

Survival Rates Following Surgery Offer Mesothelioma Patients Treatment Options After Diagnosis

A diagnosis of mesothelioma is always a devastating event for the patient and their loved ones.  The average survival rate following diagnosis of this disease is just about 12 months.  Treatment options range from chemotherapy and radiation to experimental drugs and surgical intervention.  The new information discovered in the Stanford study offers patients data to help make informed decisions regarding treatment.  Researchers concluded that the surgical removal of diseased pleural and epithelial membranes as well as portions or total removal of the diseased lung is a “safe and effective therapeutic option.”
