Philadelphia Asbestos Attorneys Review Recent Conviction for Illegal Dumping of Asbestos

Two men were recently convicted of illegally dumping massive amounts of toxic asbestos into the Mohawk River in upstate New York.   The men disposed of approximately 400 truckloads of asbestos-contaminated material into the river and on the land around the water in Frankfort, New York.   The tainted debris had been processed at a New Jersey waste management plant and then unlawfully transported to the open land in New York with the intent of improper disposal.

It was determined that the men had planned to unlawfully dispose of additional asbestos-contaminated debris over the course of five years.  If the unlawful asbestos dumping scheme had been carried out in its entirety, the entire plot of land in Frankfort, NY would have been covered in the asbestos-tainted material.  Thankfully, the long term plan was thwarted when the perpetrators were convicted just months after the dumping began.

In an attempt to cover up the illegal asbestos dumping, the two men forged a permit from the New York State Department of Environmental Conservation.  This resulted in more criminal convictions.  The men were found to be in violation of the Clean Water Act, the Superfund statute, wire fraud, and for defrauding the United States.

This illegal asbestos dumping case put many people at risk.  People exposed to asbestos are in jeopardy of developing deadly diseases including mesothelioma, lung cancer, asbestosis, and other asbestos-related illnesses.
