New Jersey Asbestos Contractor Convicted of Illegal Asbestos Removal & Disposal

According to news reports, a Lumberton, New Jersey contractor is facing up to 30 years in prison and fines up to $1,500,000 for illegal removal and disposal of asbestos.  The contractor was found to have ignored asbestos abatement regulations in order to save money and removed a boiler and numerous insulated pipes containing asbestos without following proper procedures. Unfortunately, this contractor’s actions are not uncommon, and the illegal actions of contractors regularly cause asbestos dust and particles to be released into the air causing serious risk of asbestos-related illnesses such as mesothelioma, asbestosis and lung cancer.

The state and federal governments have very specific regulations for the handling, removal and disposal of asbestos, as well as safety precautions for asbestos workersAsbestos regulations are designed to minimize the asbestos released into the air and prevent asbestos exposure to workers and bystanders.  Before commencing with any type of construction or renovation, a contractor must address the presence of asbestos and its abatement. Only accredited asbestos contractors with the proper training are permitted to do asbestos abatement. The New Jersey case demonstrates that while it is much more cost effective for contractors to ignore these regulations, violations of the regulations can bring criminal charges with serious consequences.
