Philadelphia Asbestos Lawyers Report on a New Groundbreaking Clinical Trial for Mesothelioma Patients

A new clinical trial for those suffering from mesothelioma is set to begin at the Moffit Cancer Center in Tampa, Florida. Doctors and researchers at the center are anxious to launch the Mesothelioma Selective Chemoperfusion Study designed to serve patients who are not responding favorably to traditional mesothelioma treatment.  Scientists are hopeful that this medical breakthrough will not only help mesothelioma suffers, but other cancer patients as well.

The new treatment method uses an X-ray test known as angiogram to help identify the blood vessels that provide oxygen and nutrients to cancerous tumors.  When discovered, the blood vessels are overloaded with high doses of chemotherapy in hopes of slowing or stopping the growth of mesothelioma.  In addition, targeting specific blood vessels prevent cancer treatment drugs from circulating throughout a patient’s entire body.  This can significantly reduce the negative side-effects that people often experience as a result of standard chemotherapy treatments.

The procedure used since 2013 in Germany and Egypt has yielded positive results. Nearly half the number of patients who did not respond favorably to standard treatment achieved significantly better outcomes through chemoperfusion therapy.  In 49 percent of the cases, the treatment halted growth or reduced the size of tumors.  As a result, mesothelioma patients had an easier time breathing which improved the quality of their lives.

Mesothelioma sufferers selected for the clinical trial will be closely monitored during and after they receive four to eight weekly treatments.  Although doctors and researchers are not claiming that cheomoperfusion therapy will cure their patients’ cancers, they are confident that the treatment can improve and prolong the quality of their lives.
