New Jersey Mesothelioma Lawyers:  Asbestos Exposure is the Top Fatal Work Injury in Canada

Exposure to asbestos can have a profound impact on human health.  Even low level asbestos exposure can cause serious diseases over time.   Canada is one of the largest asbestos exporters in the world.  Sadly, asbestos exposure is the top cause of fatal work injuries in the country, with nearly 5,000 confirmed mesothelioma deaths in the past 18 years.

Over the past two decades, many countries have banned asbestos use in industry because of the dangers that exposure to asbestos products imposes.  It is predicted that the number of those affected by asbestos-related diseases in Canada will continue to rise over the next ten years even if the country were to place an immediate ban on the use of asbestos products. To date, there are no plans to implement such a restriction.  The former director of the Occupational Health Clinic for Ontario Workers feels that Canada is now facing a public health disaster.

Diseases from Workplace Exposure to Asbestos

Diseases resulting from asbestos exposure can be quite unpredictable because many victims do not exhibit symptoms of mesothelioma until 20 to 40 years after being exposed to the toxic material.  According to the World Health Organization, every type of asbestos is dangerous and any level of asbestos exposure can cause cancer, with the most common form being mesothelioma.

Pleural malignant mesothelioma is a form of the disease that usually attacks the outer lining of the lungs.  Other forms of mesothelioma appear in the lining of the abdomen, or the sac that surrounds the heart.  Signs of mesothelioma include shortness of breath, chest pains, and unexplained weight loss.  Most people who develop mesothelioma have worked in jobs in which they have inhaled asbestos fibers.

Occupations that risk asbestos exposure include auto mechanics, bricklayers, carpenters, drywall workers, iron workers, electricians, painters, welders, miners, and ship builders.  Often times, family members are also at risk for second-hand asbestos exposure, when their loved ones return from working with asbestos and they handle the asbestos worker’s clothing.
