New Jersey Asbestos Lawyers:  Taconite Mining linked with Mesothelioma Cancer

Mesothelioma patients experience the breakdown of the protective lining that covers many of the internal organs in their bodies, which in most cases specifically affects the lungs.  This rare form of cancer usually attacks people who have been exposed to asbestos.  A recent study has shown that mesothelioma has also been linked to taconite mining.

For decades, miners have been concerned with the fiber-like material found in pulverized taconite iron ore dust.  The concern is that these fibers can build up in the mine workers lungs, causing respiratory diseases including mesothelioma.

U.S. Steel and The United States Steel Workers Union were two of the companies who participated in a six year study conducted by the University of Minnesota.  After analyzing study findings, it was concluded that Iron Range taconite miners faced high risks of developing mesothelioma.

The study was performed due to the rise in cancer rates found among Iron Range workers in 2006.  Fifty-seven mesothelioma cases were analyzed through 2010.  Participants in the study also included spouses of taconite miners.   Family members who wash clothes of those exposed to taconite dust fibers are at risk for second-hand exposure which can lead to a mesothelioma diagnosis. It was also determined that the longer one worked as a taconite miner, the greater the risk for developing lung diseases such as mesothelioma.

Signs of mesothelioma include chest pain, shortness of breath and a drop in weight.  X-rays, CT scans and biopsies are used to determine the presence of the disease. Those diagnosed with mesothelioma often find themselves faced with a poor prognosis. Early detection is crucial in achieving a positive outcome for the victim.
