Family members who wash clothes of those exposed to taconite dust fibers are at risk for second-hand exposure which can lead to a mesothelioma diagnosis. It was also determined that the longer one worked as a taconite miner, the greater the risk for developing lung diseases such as mesothelioma.
Signs of mesothelioma include chest pain, shortness of breath and a drop in weight. X-rays, CT scans and biopsies are used to determine the presence of the disease. Those diagnosed with mesothelioma often find themselves faced with a poor prognosis. Early detection is crucial in achieving a positive outcome for the victim.
