Philadelphia Asbestos Lawyers Report EPA Puts Public Health at Risk for Asbestos Exposure

According to a recent report issued by the Environmental Protection Agency’s Inspector General, the EPA’s Region Six study of alternatives to standard asbestos removal procedures not only failed, but it also endangered the health of workers and the public sector by exposing them to unsafe levels of asbestos.  After almost $4 million in costs and expenses to conduct the study over a ten year period, the Inspector General and the Government Accountability Office refused to approve the alternative method of asbestos removal.

The EPA Inspector General blames management control problems on the ultimate failure of the study that began in 2004 with the intent of establishing a simplified alternative to the current federally mandated asbestos removal procedures.  According to the report, the study lacked a defined goal and was not properly supervised.  This resulted in millions of dollars literally wasted in contractor costs, expenses, and research for an outcome that lacked dependable results.  The most significant factor in the project’s failing was the risk to public health.   The project was cancelled in 2011 amidst concerns by the EPA Inspector General and officials at the Government Accountability Office.

Asbestos was commonly used in the construction, heating, and automotive industries until it was banned by the EPA in 1989 when it was found to cause mesothelioma, asbestosis, and other lung diseases.  The federal government established safe handling and abatement procedures for those working to remove or demolish buildings constructed with asbestos containing materials.  Strict laws govern these procedures to ensure limited risk to workers and the general public.  The Region Six EPA study failed to establish a simplified procedure, and instead proved the reliability of the current mandates.
